Programming a Garage Door Remote

The process of programming a universal garage door remote varies according to the make and model of the device. With a wide variety of brands and models available, the differences between the programming methods can be considerable and distinctive to the brand. However, a universal in-car garage door opener remote is capable of linking with numerous garage door remote opening systems.

One popular universal in-car remote brand is Homelink, and you can program it to work with a variety of garage door opening systems, including Liftmaster, Sears Craftsman, Chamberlain and Genie. The example below includes instructions for programming a Homelink in-car remote with a Genie garage door opening system. The process is similar with other brands.

Safety First

Make sure small children and pets are not near the garage doors when you program the garage door opener. The process requires you to operate the system, so it's important to keep them away from the area.

Check Your Batteries

Make sure the batteries in the remote have plenty of power. If you're unsure, replace them with new ones.

Start Programming

To start programming the Homelink in-car transmitter, turn the ignition key to the ACC position. Press the two outer buttons on the in-car remote at the same time. Wait for the LED light indicator in the car to start flashing rapidly. This clears out any previous programming in the in-car system.

Choose a Button

Choose any of the three buttons on the in-car remote to program your garage door opener. Next, hold the Genie garage door opener remote about two inches away from the Homelink in-car remote button you chose. Press and hold down the button on the Genie remote that opens your garage door and the button you selected on the in-car transmitter at the same time. The garage door should start opening at this point. Wait for the LED lights on both transmitters to flash rapidly. Once they do, it means you have successfully set the Homelink in-car transmitter button to open and close your garage door.

Test

To check the Homelink button for proper operation, open and close the garage door by pressing on the button. If the garage door responds, then you're all set. If the garage door doesn't respond to the Homelink button, repeat the process. You can also unplug the receiver in your garage for a minute and plug it back. Repeat the programming process.
